Interiors, Chicago homes and businesses

Interior painting for Chicago homes and businesses

Walls, ceilings, trim and doors, painted after the surfaces have been prepared properly. The crew moves the furniture, covers the floors and hands the room back clean.

Chapter 01

Why patched plaster flashes through a single coat

Older Chicago walls carry a history. Plaster gets patched, skim-coated, papered and painted over for decades, and every one of those repairs drinks paint at a different rate. Put one thin coat over the lot and the patches show through as dull or shiny islands. Painters call it flashing, and it shows most when daylight rakes across the wall from a bay window.

Lap marks are the second common failure. If the wet edge of one pass dries before the next pass overlaps it, a ridge of heavier paint is left behind. Cut lines are the third: where a flat wall meets an old, slightly uneven crown moulding, a hurried edge wanders and the ceiling line looks soft instead of crisp.

None of these is a paint problem. They are preparation problems, and they are decided before the lid comes off the can. Sealing the patches so the wall drinks evenly, working in manageable sections and keeping a wet edge, then cutting in against a clean, sanded line, is what separates a wall that looks finished from one that only looks covered.

Prep first: sanding, furniture, plates and drop cloths

Walldecor publishes its residential painting prep plan, and it reads like a checklist you can hold a crew to. Every surface gets thorough sanding before any paint goes on. The crew moves the furniture, so you do not have to lift a thing. Switch plates and fixtures are removed, and they go back on once the paint has dried.

Drop cloths protect your floors and your belongings for the length of the job, and you choose from high-quality, low-VOC paints, which matters in a room that will be slept in or worked in right away. The crew can help you weigh colour and sheen before the first coat so the decision is made with the wall in front of you.

That is the plan for homes, and business clients get the same discipline of sanding, covering and clean working. If you are in Chicago and want a look at a room, an office or a shop floor, the office can be reached at (773) 960-2273, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Chapter 03

After the walkthrough: cure time and touch-ups

The job is not finished when the last coat goes on. At completion the crew cleans up and walks the finished work with you, so any spot you are not happy with is raised while the drop cloths are still down and the paint is still fresh in everyone's mind.

Paint that feels dry to the touch has not finished curing. For a while the film is still hardening, which is why furniture should go back gently, pictures should wait, and walls should not be scrubbed or leaned on. Heavy items dragged across a soft finish are how fresh paint gets scuffed in its first weeks.

Touch-ups are a matter of paint from the same batch. A different can of the same colour can dry a shade apart, so keeping a labelled can with the sheen and colour name written on it is standard practice. A dab applied with a small brush and feathered out, rather than a patch roller pass, hides best.

In its own words, Walldecor completes projects in an efficient manner at fair rates, using only top quality products and qualified painting crews.
