How we work

How a Walldecor job runs, from the first sanding pass to the walkthrough

Walldecor Incorporated is a professional team of painters offering experienced services to both business and residential clients in the Chicago region. The firm calls itself a one stop shop for the most functional and impressive upgrades to the interior or exterior of a property.

What sets the work apart, in the firm's own words, is finishing projects efficiently at fair rates, with top quality products and painting crews who are experienced at helping clients make the most informed decorating and painting decisions. Below is what that looks like when the crew arrives.

The job, in order

Most of a good paint job happens before the first coat.

These are Walldecor's own published prep commitments for residential painting. Read them as the order of a day on site.

Surfaces

Every surface is sanded, thoroughly, before any paint is opened.

Paint shows what is under it. A glossy old coat, a rough patch, a ridge at a seam: sanding is where those get dealt with, so the new finish has an even surface to sit on. It is the least photogenic step of the job, and the one the rest of the work leans on.

Furniture

The crew moves the furniture, so you don't have to.

Sofas, beds, shelves and desks come away from the walls before work starts, and they go back when it is done. You decide where things live; the crew does the lifting.

Plates and fixtures

Switch plates and fixtures come off, then go back on.

Cutting around a switch plate leaves a wobbling edge and a stray fleck. Taking it off leaves a clean line, and putting it back at the end is part of the job, not an afterthought.

Floors and belongings

Drop cloths protect your floors and your belongings.

Paint

Your choice of high-quality, low-VOC paints.

Low-VOC paint keeps the smell down in a room you still have to live or work in. The choice of colour and sheen is yours, and the crew can talk it through with you before the first can is opened.

Finish

A full clean-up, then a walkthrough with you at completion.

The job is not finished when the last coat is on. It is finished when the room is clean, the furniture is back, and you have walked the work with the crew and are satisfied with it.

Beyond the paint can

Paint, wallpaper and sprayed cabinets are handled by the same team.

Walldecor works across interior and exterior painting, wall covering and spray-finished cabinets, so one crew can carry a room from bare walls to handed-back. Images here are illustrative finish plates.

The decisions that shape the room get made before the brushes come out.

Walldecor's crews are experienced at helping clients make the most informed decorating and painting decisions. In practice most rooms come down to three questions, and it is easier to settle them on paper than on the wall.

Colour
How the shade reads in the room's own light, beside the trim and the floor, matters more than how it looks on a small chip.
Sheen
Flat hides an uneven wall, gloss shows every flaw and wipes clean. Where each one belongs is laid out on the home page.
Paper or paint
Some walls want pattern and a hung covering, others want a clean coat. Because the same team does both, the choice can be made room by room. See wall covering and interior painting.

More notes on colour, sheen and prep are on the blog.

Describe the rooms, the walls or the cabinets, and the office will call you back.
